Hoggatt School
Meeker School grounds at 18th St. and Burnett Ave., Ames; 515 233-2431  Ames’ first schoolhouse, this 1862 building was built to serve area residents before the city of Ames was established.

Farm House Museum

The oldest structure on campus is this 1861 farm house holding more than 6,000 objects authentic to the period 1860-1910.

A 1907 Masonic Temple now houses the Museum’s collection of textiles, wildlife, militaria, coal mining and railroad history, and Kate Shelley diorama.

Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace

This restored 1880s Victorian home contains period furniture, memorabilia and mementos of the life of our nation’s first lady during her husband Dwight D. Eisenhower’s term, 1953-1961.

Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad

This division of the Iowa Railroad Historical Society preserves Iowa’s railroading history and provides 15-mile round trip train rides through the scenic Des Moines River Valley.

The Community Historical Society (Maxwell)

Housed in a multi-building museum are a working print shop, lawyer’s office, Depression-era kitchen, and one-room school in addition to thousands of artifacts reflecting Story County history.

Kate Shelley Railroad Museum

This restored depot honors 15-year old Kate Shelley, who saved a passenger train from disaster during a storm in 1881.  Railroad memorabilia, a working telegraph and information about Kate Shelley are available here.

Nevada Community Historical Society

Dyer-Dowell Victorian House

Originally built in 1869 as the Story County jail, the structure was later enlarged and converted into a private home and purchased by Judge George W. and Martha Kellogg Dyer.  The Nevada Historical Society acquired the property in 1988.

Briggs Terrace/Evergreen Lane

Four generations of the Briggs and Dutton families have lived in this 1879 home.  Restoration began in 1997 and continues as resources and funds are available.  Other interesting buildings on the property include a carriage house and barn.

Halley School

The school, built in 1874, saw use through the 1944-45 school year.  It was moved to the park from its original location southeast of town.

George Child Log House

Purchased and restored by the Nevada Rotary Club in 1975, this 1854 pioneer cabin is Nevada’s oldest standing building.  It originally stood at the corner of 4th Street and J Avenue, was moved to 2nd Street and H Avenue, and finally to the grounds of Evergreen Lane after its latest refurbishing.

Story Theatre/Grand Opera House

Opened in 1913 as the Grand Opera House, this 380-seat facility is the oldest continuously running theater in Iowa.

Antique Carousel

This 1913 Herschell Spillman carousel, restored in 1982, features 26 hand-carved
poplar wood figures and a 1936 roll-playing Wurlitzer band organ.

Sheldall School
