Verses Gleaned from 19th Century Autograph Books

When the golden sun is setting
And your mind from care is free
When of others you are thinking
Will you sometimes think of me.
- - -
When the golden sun is setting
And the birds are flitting free
When of dear ones you are thinking
Won’t you sometimes think of me.
- - -
Think of me when you are happy
Keep for me one little spot
In the depth of thine affection
Plant a sweet forget me not.
- - -
I dip my pen into the ink
And grasp your album tight,
But to save my life
I can’t think one single word to write
But if writing in album would prove a friend secure
I’ll with pleasure write my name in yours.

Forget me not, forget me never
Till yonder sun shall set forever.
- - -
I only ask this little spot
In which to write Forget me not.
- - -
Here on this page I claim a spot
To write the word Forget me not.
- - -
I thought, I thought, I thought in vain
At last I thought I’d write my name.
- - -
Paddling down the stream of life
In your little canoe
May you have pleasant times
And plenty of room for two
- - -
The fairest flowers soon decay
And fondest hopes in ruin lie,
Our strongest passions soon decay
But friendship true can never die.
- - -
May you be happy and live at your ease
Get a good wife and do as you please.

I have your album in which to write
I’ve turned to a leaf that’s pure and white
I dip my pen into the ink
I knit my brow and try to think
I think, I think, I think in vain
At last I think I’ll sign my name.
- - -
A line of my writing
Oh! What shall it be,
A token of friendship
from Libbie to thee.
- - -
When you get old and cannot see
Put on your specks and think of me.
- - -
May your days be days at peace
And slide along as slick as grease.
- - -
‘Tis sweet to be remembered
but sad to be forgot
Oh how deep the anguish
To be remembered not.

Remember me and my gray eyes
When you’re at home and making pies.
- - -
When at home and in the tub
Think of me and give a rub.
- - -
When it is cold outside and stormy weather
Stand on your head and crack your heels together.
- - -
When rocks and hills divide us
And you no more I see
Just take your pen and paper
And write a line to me.
- - -
The seas between us roll
and distant be our lot
Oh, cultivate this little flower
they call forget-me-not.
- - -
Some may come and strew your way
With flowers beautiful and gay
But I from an unknown humble spot
bring one sweet flower, forget-me-not.
- - -
May bright angels guard you
May their light around you shine
None but God can ever give you
A more fervent love than mine.

When rocks and hills divide us
And you I cannot see
Remember that it was a friend
That wrote these lines for thee.
- - -
When rivers and mountains sever us
And your face I cannot see
Remember ‘tis a friend that penned
These lines to thee.
- - -
Fame is not gained at a single bound
But we build the ladder by which we rise
From the lowly earth to the vaulted skies
And we mount to its summit round by round.
- - -
When present days are past
Let not a sorrow cast
A shadow o’er thy brow
But think of youth and now.

In the storms of life
When you need an umbrella
May you have to hold it up
to a handsome young fellow.
- - -
Remember me in sadness
Remember me in love
Remember me dear Jennie
Until we’ll meet above.
- - -
Most noble and generous, benevolent and free
My heart beats with love and affection for thee.
- - -
Friendship penned these lines
May virtue hold them dear
And memory often bring to mind
The friend that placed them here.

May your friends be many
And your enemies few
May God be your guide
In what ever you do.
May your virtues ever shine
Like blossoms on a pumpkin vine.
- - -
Friendship is a golden tie
That binds our hearts together
And if you never break that tie
We will be friends forever.
- - -
When days are dark
And friends are few
Remember me and I will you.
- - -
Friendship commences these lines,
Memory holds them dear.
Oft may you recall to mind
The friend who placed them here.
