Lou Doggett, a 50 year member of the Ames Municipal Band, is shown turning over the sticks of the new tympani to 16 year old player Linda Nordyke. Director Richard Day, watching, said that the $565 cost of the kettle drums was brought down to $400 because of the trade in value of the old timpani. The drums were a gift from Doggett to the band. The presentation was made in December of 1953 at a Monday night rehearsal at the bandshell.Lou Doggett was the first resident trap drummer in the city of Ames, and in 1935 was a leader in the movement that resulted in the building of the present bandshell in City Park.
