Sanborn Insurance map view of the Ames Municipal Water Plant
The Old Flusher
This WW II era 6 X 6 was used to clean or flush the streets in the area of downtown Ames. It is mounted with a nozzle on each side, directly behind the cab. In this photo it is parked beneath the 300,000 gallon riveted storage tank behind the water plant which is visible in the background. This photo faces west.
Flushing 5th Street
In these Ames Tribune photos from March of 1951, the flusher truck is heading west at the corner of 5th Street and Burnett Street. Don Ellsworth was the driver. Here Tom McKenna is looking down from the passenger door. When spraying Main Street Tom would follow the truck on foot cleaning with a push broom. The old armory building, by this time the O'Neil Dairy building, with the peaked roof, is visible behind the truck.
In this view, the water tank is barely visible in the distance, directly in line with 5th Street.
The new 1957 flusher is seen cleaning 5th Street
just east of Duff Avenue.
Clifford Bergman often drove this sprayer
unit.
