This 1976 postcard explained the Ames Bicentennial Quilt.
The Ames Bicentennial Quilt consists of 30
thematic blocks, each 13” square and signed in the lower right-hand corner.
The quilt was made by 31 women quilters from Ames between March 18th and
June 1975 to celebrate the bicentennial of the American Revolution.
It was displayed in the Ames Public Library, then toured various Iowa cities
and the Iowa State Fair throughout 1976 before being hung in the lobby
of the First National Bank. It was stored in the Octagon for a time, returned
to the Library, and finally transferred to the Ames Historical Society
in August 2002. Accompanying the quilt are copies of the catalog
describing each block, and a scrapbook containing documentation on its
creation. Themes of the blocks are: Veishea, Main Street, Octagon,
