This photo from October of 1948 shows the Ames Fire Department's new car.  The structure in the background is First Baptist Church, located at the corner of Kellogg and Fifth Street, across the street from the fire station.  Fire Chief Sam Long is shown as he receives the keys from Fletcher Allen, of Allen Motor Company.  Allen Motors donated all deluxe accessories and equipment.  Also shown are, from left, L.W. Lackore of the Chamber of Commerce, Mayor W.L. Allan, and City Manager John Ames.

This photo from October of 1950 shows the Ames Fire Department posed in front of the Buffalo pumper in the east bay of the Municipal Building.  In the truck from left: Bernie Graves, Chief Sam Long, and Earl Quade.  Standing on the running boards are at left, Ken Taylor, and at right, Max Tevebaugh. Standing next to the truck on left, Melvin Makelbust, and on the right, Joe Highlor.  Seated on the bumper are from left, Bud McKern, Fred Roberg, Jim Hoffman, Marion Jake Thompson, and David Sills.  In front are Paul Gammon, ???, Baird Loden.  Please notify personnel at Ames Historical Society if you can identify unknown firemen or correct spelling of names.
