The second school built in Ames, known as South School, was built in 1868 at 120 South Kellogg where later the Lincoln Building would stand. A two-story frame structure, it can be seen in the background of this photo taken sometime between 1902 and 1907. Mearl Brown (1895-1985) attended this school between 1902 and 1906. He may be the third from the left in the back row. Myrtle Lanning is believed to be the teacher at the left. Thyra Hytland Gray is the teacher at the right. South School was sold at auction in 1912 when Lincoln School was built. It was later moved to a site just north of East Lincolnway (east of the solid waste plant) and made into a residence. It was later destroyed by fire.
This drawing by 7th grader Alice Hallowell is labelled S.S.S. for South Side School.
