Tilden Store of Ames

The building under the arrow was the original 1870 Tilden Store located on the north side of Onondaga Street (Main Street), just west of the Douglas Street corner.

This 1880 view shows the new Tildens brick building constructed next to the original location.

The Tilden Block (in the center of the picture) which replaced the original wood frame building was built in 1883 by George G. Tilden.   The Tilden Store, however, remained in the original brick structure.

By 1990 the Tilden Store occupied both brick buildings.

This 5 foot long wooden back door entrance sign was originally located on back of Tilden Store building in the alley behind the Tilden building (see below) just off of Douglas and between Main and Fifth Streets. The store closed in 1971.
