Moore's dairy stands at the corner of Fifth street, across from Central junior high and diagonally across from the high school.  The dairy bar is in front of the milk processing plant and is especially popular for students who want to get together over "milk shakes and sundaes."  The dairy bar is popular to others in the Ames vicinity too.  On a good Sunday, over 500 ice cream cones pass over the modern counters.  Customers have around 20 flavors at their choosing along with many of the quality dairy products processed at Moore's.

Among these many retail dairy products which are available at the dairy bar, grocery shelf and through the morning door-to-door delivery are: Cottage cheese, chocolate milk, buttermilk, orange drink, coffee cream, whipping cream, half and half and Guernsey, homogenized, low fat, and skim milk.

Over 10,000 pounds of milk go through Moore's plant each day.  It comes from farms all over the Ames vicinity and then through over 100 feet of pipe in a process that insures freshness and sanitation.  The milk is brought into Moore's plant early in the morning by contract carriers from dairies and farms in the Ames vicinity.  Producers are paid on a weight basis with premiums for higher butterfat.

The milk is weighed, sampled, clarified and then is pasteurized in big vats.  This involves heating it to a temperature of 163 degrees and holding it there for 30 minutes, killing all harmful bacteria.  Next, the milk is homogenized and bottled in containers sterilized and capped automatically.  at no time during the process is the milk touched by human hands.

Checking of quality for all Ames dairies is done by city sanitarian, Dr. Austin Getz.  No farm can sell to a local milk processing plant until its cows and milking facilities have been approved by the sanitarian.  He also tests the milk itself for quality.

Moore's pride themselves on being the only local home owned dairy with door-to-door service.  The dairy has enjoyed long standing in the community, being here for about 20 years.  Many different ingredients go into the items which are processed at Moore's dairy, but the greatest ingredient which goes into their product is controlled quality which insures their patrons of healthful and enjoyable dairy foods.
