Coal Wagon on Duff Avenue
Photo from about 1912
Eugene Hiler is shown with a load of coal on Duff Avenue south of Main Street near the weigh scales. Hotel Ames at the northwest corner of Duff and Main is visible in the background and a train is seen crossing Duff Avenue.

This is a portion of the 1896 Sanborn Insurance map that shows the location of the coal wagon in the top photo. Notice that Main Street was known as Onondaga and Hotel Ames was named Hotel Davis in 1896.

Hotel Ames (also called Ames Hotel) was located at the northwest corner of Duff and Onondaga Street (Main). This corner had been a hotel site almost since beginning of town because of the proximity to the 1865 passenger depot (north of the site of today's Dutch Oven Bakery). This brick structure, once known as the Davis Hotel, followed a frame building known as the New York House. Ames Hotel was in operation until it was removed in the 1920s. - more Hotel Ames photos -
