Changes in Sports Program Builds for Future Athletes
An improvement, over a sports activity introduced last year to the summer recreation program, has proved itself to be one of the outstanding attractions in the older age group this year. Appealing to the citys future athletes, the athletic ability tests have to many given rise to an interest in sports, especially track. To insure even competition, the participants are classified by their age, height, and weight, according to a scale devised by Ray Donels.
The tests provide an opportunity to compete not only with those in the same playground, but with performances at the other playgrounds in the city. To carry this on further, comparisons are made with other cities through the State Playground Track and Field meet, a postal meet, which was held here a few weeks ago. Within six or seven years from now you might expect to hear about such up and coming athletes as Ronny Jones, Andy Lewis, Dave Bennett, Marvin Berry, Dick Kratoska, Gene Greiner and Bob Ellis.
Ronny Jones, nine-year old from the Crawford playground, has broken just about every record on the books. For a little boy a time of 6.9 in the 50-yard dash and a broad jump of 12 ft. 2 in. is something to be mighty proud of. Andy Lewis, 11-year-old from Pammel playground, is another boy headed for great things. The lanky redheads best is a 39 high jump and 13 0 broad jump.
One of the citys top sprinters is 11-year-old Dave Bennett from Lincoln playground. Dave is another lad who has erased quite a few old records. His best performances are a 6.8 50-yard dash, a 4 high jump and a 12 11 broad jump.
Dick Kratoska and Gene Greiner are two boys who have taken time this summer to improve themselves. Both were top performers of the Central Junior High track team last spring. Dick has turned up with a 6.4 50-yard dash, a 11.4 100-yard dash, and a 15 4 broad jump. Dick is 13 years old. Gene Greiner has a 5 11 high jump mark and a 16 8 broad jump this summer.
