Lincoln Way Widening
1963 photo by Dean Knudson

This view looking east on Lincoln Way at the Lynn Avenue intersection shows a portion of Lake LaVerne and the Memorial Union on the left and the Westinghouse Laundry and Dick & Eva's Café on the right.  While the widening of Highway 30 smoothed traffic flow through Ames, the removal of hundreds of trees changed the character of the campustown area. - View more photos of the widening process. -

Lake LaVerne is on the right.  Westinghouse Laundry and Dick & Eva's Cafe (Schminkey) are visible on the left.  Stanton Avenue heads left at the top of the hill.

A view seldom seen is this scene of the widening of Lincoln Way from the memorial Union.  Trees which formerly blocked the view have been cleared away in preparation for the widening and paving of Lincoln Way.  Lake LuVerne, in the foreground, will be changed somewhat as the Morrill Road - Lynn Ave. intersection with Lincoln Way is squared off.
