PRIZE DRAWING FOR SAFETY MONTH AT AMES BANDSHELL MONDAY NIGHT - Ames residents who have been wise enough to have their cars safety-checked during the first three Monday check days of Safety Month will have a chance to realize a reward Monday night, May 21.  Twelve special prizes worth $300 in merchandise will be offered in a drawing to be held at the Ames Bandshell at 7:30 Monday night.  And besides the merchandise prizes given by members of the Ames Automobile association, two shiny bicycles will be given at the drawing to one lucky boy and one lucky girl.

The prizes are being sponsored by the auto dealers of Ames, who are cooperating with the state and national safety agencies this month, as a reward to residents for doing the safe thing - having cars checked to prevent accidents.

Monday the eight-hours-per-day Safety Lane will open up on Main street just north of the Northwestern depot.  Members from the auto dealers association garages will give a full free check on all lights, both hand and foot brakes, windshield wiper, and tie-rods of the steering apparatus.

Check lanes are tentatively scheduled for Monday through Friday, May 21-25.  If a car passes inspection, safety shields are issued.  If a car does not pass, the driver may return after the malfunction is repaired, and get his car okayed.

Ames youngsters will have a chance for a safety lane of their own Saturday morning if they take their bikes to either Central Junior high or Welch Junior high in the fourth ward, to have Safety Scotch-lite reflecting tape applied to their bikes by Ames Jaycees.  Members of the police department will aid the Jaycees by issuing licenses to all who have yet to register.

MOTORISTS RESPOND SATISFACTORILY TO SAFETY CHECKS; 75% ALL RIGHT - Ames motorists are responding in very satisfactory numbers to the Safety check lane, and by 12:30 today some 190 cars had been run through.  Of this group nearly 75 percent were checked "all right," an unusually high number compared to last August when the number of defective cars was about the same figure - 75 percent.  Some of the defects have been serious, however:

One car had absolutely no braking power at all.  Another car's tie rods were nearly worn through, and this would mean the steering ability of the car was endangered.  Another car's wheel bearings were so badly worn that they automatically prevented any chance of driving at fast speed.

This week is the final effort in the safety campaign, part of which will be celebrated by a special drawing tonight.  The big drawing for 12 merchandise prizes worth $300 and also drawings for a boys' and a girls' bicycle, will be held at the Ames Bandshell at 7:15.

Only those smart and lucky persons who had their cars safety checked on one of the three Monday's of this Safety Month of May are holding stubs which make them eligible for the drawings tonight.  Some Ames boy and girl will ride home proud and happy with a free bicycle, and the 12 merchandise prizes will be given to the adults for having their cars safety checked free of charge.

Cars began rolling through the Safety Lane over on Main street this morning at a moderate pace.  The lane is being sponsored by the Ames Automobile Dealers association, and checks are being made free of charge.  The lane area is just north of the Chicago & Northwestern railroad depot on Main.

The safety lane is open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. today as it will be through Friday, and all Ames residents are urged to stop by for the free check.  A small inspection seal "O-K" is posted on the windshield when the car has been passed by the crews.  If a car doesn't pass inspection, the driver can have the faulty item repaired and return for his seal.  Sixteen items are checked, which include headlights, tail lights, stop lights, windshield wipers, foot brake, hand brake, and tie rods.

Auto dealer garages who are members of the association are furnishing personnel for the safety lane, and reports say they are doing a speedy job, as well as a thorough one.  The auto dealers hope that the cars will continue to appear at the present rate, which today was about 45 per hour.
