4th of July Dedication
Unpublished Tribune photo from July 4, 1954

Ames Explorer Scout troops took part July 4 in the dedication of a flag and flag pole at Grand and Lincoln Way.  Curly McNabb (left) accepted the pole and flag for the Patriotic Council.  Explorers who took part in the ceremony are (left to right behind flag) Leon Wardle, Louis Thompson, Kent Schach, and Karsten Smedal.  This photo faces east towards the Ames High School fieldhouse.  Harvey Taylor constructed more than 30 flagpoles for the Ames community, placing them in parks, schools and other public buildings.  He is seen wearing a long tie towards the right of the image.
