Ellen Landon, Road Queen
Tribune photo published March 6, 1958

Mrs. Ellen Landon of 214 22nd Street was the winner of a Cushman Road King scooter in the Rushing’s Super Valu “Bonus Month” contest of 1958.  The grocery store, located south of the tracks at 202 Market Street, enticed shoppers with $700 in gifts and free groceries.

A WINNING EXPERIENCE: On March 3, 1958 I posed for a Daily Tribune photographer at 214 22nd Street on my new 1958 Cushman Roadking Scooter.  I won it in a contest, sponsored by Rushing's Supermarket, for making the closest guess on the number of beans in a jar.  My 2-year-old daughter, Julie (inside the front door), seemed unhappy about not coming out for the photo event!  I, my family, and friends enjoyed the scooter through the summer months, but I sold it for $125 in the fall when the approaching winter made scooter travel seem less feasible.  I still live at the 22nd Street address, and the "toddler," now Julie Landon Huisman, lives at 3209 Bayberry Drive.

A 2010 confession from a young 1958 Rushings Super Value employee:

We put the Cushman up on some tissue boxes in the near the milk coolers so everyone could see it.  I don't know how long the contest ran.  As I remember, Saturday night was the night we washed the floor after the store closed.  We had 4 kids do the floors.  One kid ran the machine and the rest of us mopped the floor.  I think it usually took us a couple of hours to do our job.  One weekend after the store closed we took the Cushman down and then went over to Hohenshell's gas station and got some gas.  Then we rode the scooter around in the aisles of the store.  We had forgotten that the tires would make black marks on the floor, so we had to spend more time scrubbing those off.  There was some haze in the store from the exhaust, so we went up and down the isles with aerasol cans and sprayed the air to get rid of the smell.  I am sure we didn't ride it very long but it was fun at the time.  We were 18 year old kids so this was exciting.  I hope I don't get into trouble for telling this story.

The two indoor photos of the Cushman Scooter were not taken at Rushings Grocery, but inside Ames Cycle Company at 720 East Lincoln Way.  S.R. Sam Stokke operated the authorized Ames dealership for Harley Davidson Motorcycles, Cushman Motor Scooters, and Scott Atwater Outboard Motors.
