William West - 1821-1919
William West was a highly respected pioneer Ames businessman. From 1869 until 1892, he and his wife, Harriet, operated the first hotel in Ames, the West House, located where the Octagon building is today. William was on the Ames school board in the 1880s when Central School was built on the site of our present City Hall. A report of his funeral appeared in the January 8, 1920 issue of the Rock Rapids Reporter. |
