SERVICE FLAG DEDICATED
BY METHODIST CHURCH
The Methodist Church was the scene of a sacred and impressive
service Sunday morning during the worship hour. The occasion was
the dedication of a satin service flag, honoring the seventeen boys in
service from the church. The local pastor, Rev. A.D. Holtry, had
charge of the ritual which included a hymn, short talk, poem and a prayer
hymn by members of the choir.
As the organist played "America" softly, each boy's name was read.
Then the mother, wife or relative of the boy came forward and lit a large
white candle in his honor. The seventeen candles were placed in a
white V shaped holder. |

GERMAN EXHIBIT IN STORE WINDOW ATTRACTS ATTENTION - Groups of
people have seemed very much interested in the German souvenirs which are
on display this week in the windows of the M. and M. grocery store.
The collection was sent to Mrs. Edward Bird, 512 Ninth street, from her
husband, Lieut. Col. Edward Bird, who is with the 180th Infantry.
It is an assortment of articles such as those usually taken from
German soldiers, many of which are more easily obtained from the dead ones.
The items vary from leaflets to shot guns. The leaflets
are samples of those dropped on our boys over there, appealing to their
sympathies and advising them of the uselessness of fighting. There
are bills of different denominations, many arm bands with the swastika
design and also a few medals. Several knives are on exhibition, one
of which is covered with the dried blood of some Allied soldier, no doubt.
There are also shot guns with engraved mountings and a helmet with a bullet
hole through the top. Among the articles is a banner with words in
the German language which translated is "in memory of our fallen comrades."
A beer stein in Munchen pottery is very quaint.
Perhaps the main attraction for some is the bottle of fine champagne
labeled "Napoleon" and dated 1811 which makes it 134 years old, a note
attached says, "Old Nap sure liked good booze." It was presumably
taken from some wine cellar many of which are coming to light after many
years. There are seven bottles of the same brand all in collectors'
hands, according to the information given.
One outstanding article of the collection not shown in the window
is a beautiful altar robe. It was given to Bird by a priest.
This is perhaps about two yards square and weighs seven pounds.
It is of heavy satin and elaborately embroidered in solid designs with
heavy metallic thread on both sides. The designs are such that may
be found on any altar cloth from a Catholic church. It is also finished
with bands of loops so that it can be used for a wall hanging. Many
are wondering why the priest would part with it while the conjecture seems
to be that the priest gave it to an American to prevent it from being destroyed. |
